Known as one of the most intense competitors in any sport and of any era, Tom Brands reached the pinnacle of amateur wrestling by winning the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Competing at 62 kg (136.5 pounds), Brands gave up only one point on his way the gold medal.

Prior to his victory at the 1996 Olympics Brands made three World Teams in a row. Brands placed first at the '93 World Championships but failed to medal in '94 and '95.

While competing for the University of Iowa from 1989-1992 Brands became one of the all-time greats. He was a four-time All-American, winning three NCAA titles in 1990, '91, and '92. His career record of 158-7-2 included a perfect 45-0 season in 1991.

Brands is currently the head coach of the University of Iowa wrestling team.
